Late Model Ford 3-Valve V8 engines have a special plug design. The OE Motorcraft/Autolite spark plug was later found to have a significant defect. The plug utilizes a special 3-piece design, the OE plug being crimped at each seam. Mechanics and vehicle owners are now finding this plug has a tendency to come apart at the seams upon removal. This usually results in a large repair bill as pieces of the plug fall down into the combustion chamber.
Champion has created an improved version of the OE plug. Champion's 7989 fits these 3-Valve V8 engines, but has been manufactured with a 1-piece shell, preventing it from coming apart upon removal. The Champion plug is also double platinum, increasing longevity and potentially increasing plug performance, while the OE plug was single platinum.
