Air Gap Technology is when the ground electrode is to the side of the center electrode. It may be used for racing plugs in which no ground electrode is present and the plug housing is used as the ground or in designs where multiple ground electrodes are present such as the Platinum+2, +4 and Ir-Fusion Bosch spark plugs. These spark plugs have improved efficiency and a higher probability of igniting a lean air/fuel mixture. This is because there is a lower resistance when the spark travels along the insulator nose when compared to a standard J gap plug. Therefore, you can generate a longer spark using this design while maintaining the same ignition voltage. This has allowed Bosch to create a larger gap without increasing the voltage requirements. In turn, this exposes a larger spark to the air/fuel mixture resulting in a more complete burn which should be seen in higher mileage, more horsepower and reduced emissions of unburned combustion gases. |
